WHO DISCOVERED BENDIGO GOLD?
The latest book published by the AIGS was researched and written by the late David Horsfall, and takes a new look at the 1890 Select Committee Report into the claims of Henry Frencham for the reward as “Discoverer” of the Bendigo Goldfield.
This committee did not follow the rules for granting rewards which previous committees had set down. Instead it fell into the trap, like so many present-day people, of thinking the word “discover” has the same meaning as the word “find”.
Margaret Kennedy, speaking on behalf of herself and Julia Farrell, never claimed to be the first to find gold in Bendigo Creek. What she did claim was that they were there before Frencham (but they were panning in secret).
It was Henry Frencham who proclaimed to the world that gold was abundant at Bendigo, and caused the Rush which resulted in the founding of the City of Bendigo.
Has David Horsfall worked out the answer to an age-old query?
